Hamas – A Palestinian political party based in Gaza, which in Arabic means zeal and is an acronym for the Arabic words for the Islamic Resistance Movement. Its armed wing is called Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Bridages. In 2006, Hamas won the elections for the legislature of the Palestinian National Authority and has been involved in governmental affairs for the Palestinians officially since then. Hamas has been designated a terrorist organization by the European Union, Canada, Israel, Egypt, Japan, and the United States but specifically is not seen so by Russia, China, Turkey and Switzerland.
