Makkah – Islam’s top holy city, both a sanctuary for Muslims and a forbidden city for non-Muslims. Alternative spelling, always capitalised, when used in Saudi Arabia is spelled Makkah, so lessen the use of Mecca. Do not use in a colloquial sense since it is offensive i.e. “tourist mecca”.
